SELCHP pulls in the crowds - 23/09/2013

The facility, operated and part-owned by Veolia Environmental Services, saw 727 local residents, community groups and interested members of the public visit as part of the London Open House Weekend, smashing the previous best of 500.

Visitors could tour around the plant to see how it works in treating 430,000 tonnes of London's waste a year, with highlights being the chance to operate the giant 'claws' that grab and move waste tipped from collection lorries, and also a first glimpse at the generation point for the new district heating network that will be providing heat to 2,500 local homes from December.

Robbie Jameson, SELCHP's general manager, said: "It was fantastic to welcome so many people to our facility and I hope everyone found it an informative and interesting day. All the feedback about the facility I have received so far from visitors has been extremely positive and I'd like to thank everyone who attended for taking the time to see what happens to their waste from behind the scenes. I also thank the team here at SELCHP for all their efforts in making the day a success and their continued hard work in operating and maintaining this important facility."
